Every two months, on a Tuesday evening, SHORTIES brings together short works by artists from Stuttgart and Baden-Württemberg in the fields of dance, puppetry and film, creating a unique cultural experience.

An improvisation

Thomas and Chu are chatting.
About art, performing and improvising.
About recipes and not allowing recipes.
About the need to make decisions.
About the need not to make decisions.
About boring bits and dry spells. About unintentional humour and deliberate dynamics.
About ‘killing darlings’ and darlings that have been killed…

A digital recording device is also used. The conversation is twisted, chopped up, sampled and reassembled via the mixer. Using a MIDI guitar, Thomas plays the processed, distorted and deconstructed speech samples on the guitar and interacts with Chu’s dance improvisations. A sampler loaded with snippets of the conversation takes its place on stage as the third performer and, at the push of a button, parrots Chu’s and Mao’s disjointed thoughts on the topic of improvisation. The performers react to the random selection of sound samples. This gives rise to a complex question-and-answer game on stage that questions the substance of performative acts.

What is the value of such entertainment, and does it even have any ”Unterhaltungswert“ at all?

Hello! Welcome to our game of life – ”It's your choice“ showcases the endless yet rewarding array of decisions that we are all faced with day in, day out. Wearing oversized two-dimensional masks, Jule Bröcker transforms into the cartoon character Eve, who is relentlessly shunted about by the instructions of a disembodied voice.
