For anyone who wants to review, improve, or even completely revamp their professional life

Multi-track career paths have always been a feature of creative professions. And yet, a stubborn belief persists in the minds and hearts of many artists and non-artists alike, one that seems outdated: “If an artist is talented, they will also achieve financial success and fame. Anyone who does something else besides art has failed or cannot be a ‘real’ artist.” This tunnel vision causes artists to feel shame and failure when they need the opposite in order to build their careers.

This one-day workshop focuses attention on the full scope of decision-making, thereby reducing the subjective and objective dependence that many artists suffer from. A career as an artist comes with many privileges that are sometimes forgotten under the pressure of securing a livelihood. Those who reflect on this return to familiar territory for creative people: a free field that can be shaped using typical artistic skills such as imagination, flexibility, creativity, initiative, enthusiasm, frustration tolerance, discipline, and ambiguity tolerance. And in doing so, they achieve what it's all about: more space for art.

Heike Scharpff and Alina Gause began their professional careers with their own artistic work and now coach other artists in addition to their artistic life, accompany transition processes in artistic career models as coaches.

Heike Scharpff (left in the picture)

Heike Scharpff (Dipl.-Psych. & director) works as a director on social choreographies and documentary theater pieces, among other things. She has founded several independent theater groups and has been invited to various festivals. Heike Scharpff co-directs the community theater Kanaltheater Eberswalde with its ZUKUNFT JETZT! (FUTURE NOW!) festival and the ‘kaleidoskop kinder und jugendtheatertage durch die hessischen regionen’ (kaleidoscope children's and youth theater days through the regions of Hesse). At the same time, she is a psychologist with additional training as a theater and drama therapist. As project manager of the Stiftung TANZ– Transition Zentrum Deutschland, she accompanied almost 1.000 professional dancers until 2019 in establishing a second career alongside their dance careers and in their professional transition afterwards. Her coaching sessions address the transition processes in the professional lives of artists.

Alina Gause (right in the picture)

Alina Gause (Dipl.-Psych. & actress/singer) was born in Berlin, where she completed her training in acting, singing, and dance. This was followed by engagements at the Maxim Gorki Theater, Theater des Westens, in film and television, and five solo evenings for which she wrote the text and music. In addition to this work, she studied psychology and has been advising creative personalities, institutions, and professional associations of all genres since 2009. Alina Gause has published three non-fiction books for creative professionals, the most recent of which has been translated into English. In July 2022, she took over as artistic director of THEATER IM PALAIS BERLIN, where she is also active as an actress, director, and author.

The event is part of the workshop and information series "Health promotion for the independent dance and performance scene".

The series is funded by the LHS Stuttgart as part of the Entwicklungstreiber Kultur program.
