Contemporary Dance Workshop and Lecture “The Body as a Solo Scenic Figure” with a lecture demonstration

As part of this year’s International Solo Dance Theater Festival, we are offering exciting professional workshops for the first time at the Production Center for professional dancers and festival participants.

Lecture Workshop "The body as a solo scenic figure" // Lina Do Carmo
Saturday, 18.03.2023, 14.00 – 15.30 pm

Using film excerpts, the lecture with workshop shows what distinguishes a solo dance performer in the contemporary platform of expression. How strong the tradition of solo dance is in Germany is shown by the great icons from expressionist to contemporary dance such as Susanne Linke, Mary Wigman, Pina Bausch and others. The method lecture demonstration works according to the principle "from concrete to the abstract" and the "learning by doing".

Workshop Contemporary Dance for professional dancers // Samuli Emery
Saturday, 18.03.2023, 16.00 – 17.30 pm

The class deals with rich emotional and imaginative frames as motivations for epic dances. We aim to utilise emotions as malleable material, awaken our generative imagination, unleash an inner drama queen and fake it 'til we make it. The class consists of long, multi-layered improvisational scores that summon the group's embodied knowledge and relational perception, leading us into a highly physical and potentially ecstatic movement terrain. It also serves as an artificial laboratory for practising useful tools for being more loving and resilient in the outside world, including but not limited to: listening, enjoying, co-existing, trusting, saying yes, saying no, setting boundaries and feeling fully.

Samuli Emery won 2nd prize in the dance category at the 21st International Solo-Dance-Theatre Festival Stuttgart in 2017 for his solo "We Do This. We Don't Talk".
