The dance experiments created 100 years ago by the dance innovator Rudolf von Laban at the legendary Monte Verità artists’ colony in Ticino form the basis of the project “Monte Verità – Raumdeutungen”. Under the artistic direction of dancer and choreographer Juliette Villemin, dancers and students from the State Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart are exploring the relationship between modern dance and the visual arts. By looking back at the visual and written works of Monte Verità’s dance artists, the connections between body and space established at that time are reexamined and reinterpreted in a contemporary context. They are tested against a different reality. To what extent are they still part of our understanding of body and space today?
