International Solo-Dance-Theatre Festival Stuttgart - The Stuttgart-Evening as Festival Kick-off

Every year, the Stuttgart International Solo-Dance-Theatre Festival provides an overview of the latest international developments in the young contemporary dance scene.

Choreographers and dancers from all over the world present a solo piece that offers a new, original, imaginative and unusual performance with its own style.

As a kick-off to the international festival, Stuttgart SOLO CHOREO will once again take place in 2027:

On this evening, dancers and choreographers from Stuttgart and the region will exclusively show their work.

In the same format as the international competition, the Stuttgart dance scene will present six solo works from Stuttgart and the surrounding region (Stuttgart metropolitan area) on stage on Wednesday, 10 March 2027.

The evening is not part of the competition and the pieces will not be awarded prizes. Applications for the Stuttgart evening as well as for the competition are possible with two different pieces. Multiple submissions for the evening are also possible.


General conditions

• Professional Stuttgart dancers / choreographers with a contemporary solo piece can apply (main focus of work and life in the Stuttgart metropolitan region).
• It does not have to be a premiere. Applications with excerpts from full-length pieces are possible.
• The duration of the performance must be between 9 and 12 minutes.
• The choreographies should be based on a contemporary and original movement language. The choice of topic and music is up to the artist.
• Applications as a duo are possible - At least one person involved should be living and working in Stuttgart. We are unable to cover travel expenses or transportation costs.
• There is NO age limit.
• The choreographies or work samples to be presented must be submitted as an online link (YouTube or Vimeo) (NO WeTransfer link).
  

Selection

• The team will select the solos in consultation with the technical management and invite them before Christmas 2026.
• Participation must be confirmed by the beginning of January 2027.

Fee

• The solo and performance fee per artist is 590,- € (1x performance evening à 310,-€ + 2 rehearsal days à 140,- € according to the recommendations of the BFDK for KSK insured artists; Stand 2025). The artist will issue a proper invoice after the performance.

Technical Specifications (Robert-Bosch-Hall at TREFFPUNKT Rotebühlplatz, vhs stuttgart)

ATTENTION: NEW LIGHTING AND REHEARSAL REQUIREMENTS

• Stage: 10 × 8.5 m
• Black dance floor
• 4 wings on each side of the stage
• Backdrop: black curtain or grey stone wall
• Standard lighting:
  • General wash (2 rows of front lights), warm and cold (L202, L204)
  • Backlight (2 rows), warm and cold
  • Side lighting (wings), warm and cold
• Specials: Centre-stage spotlight (without colour filter), strobe light
• Audio playback: CD (CD Audio) or USB (WAV or MP3)

Only lightweight, easily transportable props are permitted for the stage design. Their setup and strike must not delay the performance schedule. All props must comply with fire safety class B1 (flame-retardant). Hanging objects is not possible. Materials such as sand, water, stones, flour, powder, beads, marbles, etc., that soil the stage or require extensive cleaning after the performance are not permitted. Open flames, candles, fireworks, as well as fog, haze or smoke effects and any other effects that require special safety measures are prohibited. The final approval rests with the technical team of vhs stuttgart.

PLEASE NOTE: On the day of the performance, each participant is allocated a maximum of 45 minutes for stage setup, lighting programming, and rehearsal. Lighting programming is included within this time slot. Only the technical equipment and lighting options specified in this open call will be available. Additional rehearsals on site are not possible and must be arranged independently.

Applications are possible from now on. Applications can be submitted in German and English. Applications can be submitted via application form.

Only complete applications submitted on time will be considered for selection.

The event will be broadcast live at www.vhs-stuttgart.de and www.solo-tanz-theater.de.

Participants are required to be free on the day of the event, 10^th of March 2027, and to make themselves available free of charge for interviews, film and television recordings and photo shoots, etc.
