The three-day TANZLOKAL dance festival is a tribute to the artists Rudolf von Laban, Kurs Jooss, Mary Wigman and Oskar Schlemmer, who all worked in Baden-Württemberg at the beginning of the 20th century and had a decisive influence on contemporary dance. At the same time, the dance festival aims to recall the origins of modern dance: this movement saw itself as an alternative to industrial mechanisation and aimed to free people from the monotony of their movements. For this reason, the dancers returned to the great outdoors. The aim was to bring people, who had become alienated from their holistic nature, back into a natural cycle of movement. TANZLOKAL takes up these fundamental ideas and presents the choreographies and performances predominantly outdoors, in public spaces. Furthermore, TANZLOKAL – drawing freely on Rudolf von Laban’s motto ‘Every person is a dancer’ – aims to encourage the audience to dance. The festival was made possible by funding from the TANZFONDS ERBE, an initiative of the German Federal Cultural Foundation. The aim is to raise public awareness of Germany’s dance heritage once again through artistic engagement. The state of Baden-Württemberg is supporting the festival with €20,000 from the Arts Innovation Fund.
At the heart of the dance festival were five original productions by choreographers and collectives from the younger generation who have a connection to Baden-Württemberg. A key element of TANZLOKAL was the movement choir (Bewegungschor), based on Rudolf von Laban’s dance and choreographic concept, which he devised specifically for amateurs. TANZLOKAL adopted this concept and developed it further in a contemporary form. Key to this were the participation and inclusion of as many members of the public as possible. In addition, a total of three guest performances took place. The festival was rounded off by the TANZKINO series featuring historical dance films at the Haus der Geschichte, a TANZBRUNCH with the TANZLOKAL artists, and a TANZTALK with contemporary witnesses.
The event is organised by Produktionszentrum Tanz + Performance e.V., Stuttgart, in collaboration with TanzSzene Baden-Württemberg e.V., the Württembergischer Kunstverein, the Haus der Geschichte Baden-Württemberg, Kulturgemeinschaft, the Akademie Schloß Solitude, the Reiss-Engelhorn Museums, artur and Stuttgartmagazin LIFT.
TANZLOKAL – Tanzfest Stuttgart is a TANZFONDS ERBE project. An initiative of the Federal Cultural Foundation. Funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts and the Paul-Lechler Foundation.
