An outdoor walk performance by choreographer Smadar Goshen in cooperation with ‘Zeichen der Erinnerung e.V.’
The 30-minute piece is based on the family history of Israeli-German choreographer Smadar Goshen. The family was part of the Jewish community in Württemberg until the great-grandmother was deported to Riga on 1 December 1941. The performance begins with a calm voice welcoming the audience via headphones as the group embarks on a 25-minute walk from the Prague Cemetery to the ‘Sign of Remembrance’ memorial. Along the way, it offers the audience the opportunity to reflect on heritage, family history, belonging and the concept of ‘home’. Goshen, who moved from Israel to Stuttgart, discovered her great-grandmother's name by chance on the memorial wall of ‘Zeichen der Erinnerung’. Three years later, she wonders whether her move from Israel to Stuttgart was fate or coincidence.
PASSING uncovers Goshen's discoveries and the gaps in her family history and brings to life the stories of Stuttgart's Jewish community in the 1930s and 1940s. These stories are complemented by six dancers who perform what is hidden between the words, what cannot be described with language alone.
The walk ends at the ‘Sign of Remembrance’ memorial and invites the audience to explore the memorial.
