The concept for the dance performance The Community was created by Stuttgart choreographer Juliette Villemin, who died suddenly in January 2023. Now the Cologne-based choreographer Carla Jordão has taken on the task of continuing it according to her own artistic ideas and setting it in motion with four performers and a musician. With Carla Jordão, the choice fell on a choreographer whose work shows striking parallels with that of Juliette Villemin. In their investigations into contemporary dance, both explore the question of what dance is or, better still, what dance can be and take a descriptive and analytical look at the body language of everyday life in order to expand and socially reconnect the dance vocabulary. In line with their socio-political concerns, they develop their choreographic language from the observation of gestural and physical postures and behaviour. From this perspective, the everyday gesture becomes dance. The Community project is part of this perspective.
With the invitation to become part of the community, the dance performance takes up the social longing to experience community in a particularised society and meets it through the offer of communication. The performers interactively and playfully open the circle to situations of communal togetherness through dance. The circle to situations of communal togetherness, of belonging, of being apart, emotional and absurd, and extend it to the audience: BE PART OF US. For the experience of moving together, even if only for a fluid moment.
