The second edition of our series SHOWROOM – Die Werkstattreihe im Produktionszentrum will take place as part of stuttgartnacht 2011. Choreographers, dancers, and performers will present their current works and engage in dialogue about them.

At stuttgartnacht, which takes place once a year, many cultural organizers—primarily from the fields of theater, music, dance, film, and literature—offer exciting insights into their work.

Fit for Something
The performance “Fit for Something” picks up on and engages with the body-shaping trend. While performing seemingly mundane exercises, flashes of thought about the meaning and absurdity of fitness and wellness emerge. Surprisingly, connections emerge to entirely different aspects of life.

With this choreography, Denny Hartmann has turned his attention to the theme of “leaving.” What does it mean for us today—for me, for oneself—to leave something or someone behind? How quickly do we let go of something outwardly, and how long do we hold on to it inwardly? What do I leave behind when I let go of something? For what reason do we leave, or does this step happen intuitively, without us knowing why? Do I stay where I am, or will I go back? How do I feel about it if I go back? And: Where will I be lonelier?

Fleisch (7.30 pm only)
“Fleisch” takes a critical look at the food industry, particularly the production of cheap meat, which tolerates inhumane conditions for animal husbandry, transport, and slaughter. The piece criticizes exploitation and the socially irresponsible treatment of both humans and animals.

In Her Skin // Work in Progress from “Superschwester Barbie”
What does it feel like from the inside? If I were inside her from head to toe. Feeling her scalp, her face, the wrinkles around her eyes… The imprint her feet leave in her shoes. Her favorite dress, stretching tight across my bust, waist, and hips, making me look like a sausage. I wonder how comfortable she feels in her own skin?

“fragile” is a dance solo presented within an installation that explores fragility and boundaries. Fragility is part of human identity, and in my identity as a dancer, I asked myself what makes me seem vulnerable or fragile. Boundaries—both physical and mental—are part of our coexistence. The installation serves as a metaphor, representing both visible and invisible boundaries. Like a spider’s web, in which the dancer is both spider and prey.

Shower-liches
8.30 – 9.30 pm // 10.15 – 11.00 pm in the shower room

“Shower-liches” is a short, site-specific performance for confined spaces—in this case, the future Produktionszentrum shower room. It draws on the common practice of singing in the shower. A recorded text examines common beauty ideals that people are constantly confronted with during personal hygiene. By striving for a flawless body, humans distance themselves from their animal nature. What happens when, in movement, the animal within us nevertheless breaks free?
